(MIRS)--Outside of inner-city Flint and Detroit, the 53rd District is the state’s most liberal district. The Ann Arbor-based 53rd district boasted a 79.9 percent Democratic base in 2008. The home of the University of Michigan, the district is part of Washtenaw County, which was one of only two counties in 2004 that voted against Proposal 2, which enshrined into the constitution that marriage is between one man and one woman.
Located in Washtenaw County, the district includes Ann Arbor city and the portion of Ann Arbor Twp. contained within the city limits of Ann Arbor.
