Students Finding Their Voice, Expressing Their Opinions Unit Plan

Overview:
This unit plan is designed to motivate students to become informed about political issues and participating in the political process. Participating in MiVote allows students to become engaged in the political process and provides a real life experience in how to research issues and voice their opinions on issues using 21st century technology to inform and influence others. The following suggested activities are designed to help students gain background knowledge and develop their own voice and viewpoint regarding political to participate in MiVote.

Unit/Project Objectives: Students will be able to…

  1. Develop public discourse skills and make informed decisions
  2. Write a persuasive essay expressing and justifying decisions on public policy issues
  3. Create a video that expresses their view on a political issue
  4. Advance views in matters of public policy
  5. Understand the roles of media and constituents in the political process
  6. Use multiple perspectives and resources to analyze issues
  7. Develop elocution skills
  8. Improve research skills
  9. Use video technology to voice opinions on political issues

Timing: 3 to 4 class periods: Times are written for 70 minute class periods.
